Bringing Back “Other Places” to GNOME Nautilus File Manager

After a recent update, I discovered that such a handy feature as “Other Places” was missing from the Nautilus file manager (included in GNOME).

The authors explain this by saying that connected places can be moved to the left sidebar, and free space can be viewed in other utilities. To access the root of the disk, they suggest using the key combination Ctrl + L, enter “/”, and press Enter. Or, in shortened form, simply press “/” and Enter.

In my opinion, this is a very questionable decision. It was very stupid to remove such an important feature without leaving a switch to return the old behavior.

To get “Other Places” back, you need to roll back to Nautilus 46.2. In Manjaro Linux, you can do this by running the command:

Then select any of the 46.2 versions and add to IgnorePkg
